PROCESS DESIGN

We start with the Blast Furnace process utilizing our in-house process specialist to ensure that all the work we do will positively contribute to the bottom line of our customers by increasing the blast furnace production, reducing production costs or increasing the in-service life.  Our process specialists can determine the blast furnace production requirements then apply appropriate catch-up, safety factors or accommodation for future production increases. All are discussed with our clients such that they can make an informed decision on what is best for their plant.

REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

We routinely execute engineering to support scheduled or emergency repair and maintenance services.  This includes detailed site inspections to design specifically what is required for the repair.  Attention to detail such that the repairs are executed with maximization of pre-assembly and planning to minimize construction costs and operational downtime.

RELINE ENGINEERING

We have all required engineering disciplines and project management expertise to provide complete blast furnace reline services from scope development through to and including Blast Furnace commissioning and start-up.

CAMPAIGN EXTENSION

We have had considerable success in working with our clients to provide new and unique methods to extend cooler and refractory life.  The CIM-Tech Nitrogen Mist Cooling system noted in the Blast Furnace section is just one example of our ability to develop innovative and cost effective solutions that work.

COOLING AND PUMPING SYSTEMS

Water systems and pumping is one of core competencies that CIM-Tech excels at.  We have designed all types of complete cooling systems including cooling towers and heat exchangers to provide specific improved cooling including high pressure tuyere cooling systems.

OPERATIONAL TRAINING

Blast Furnace Academy, a 3 Week Blast Furnace Course in process and operations for:

  1. Casthouse
  2. Hot blast stoves
  3. Gas Cleaning
  4. Pumps & water Systems
  5. Shutdown Planning
The intent and level of the course material is targeted for new managers.  The course material and instructions are presented by CIM-Tech and McMaster University lecturers.

 

Refactory Design & Supply

Refractory design is another of the CIM-Tech core competencies.  We combine modern computational analysis with many years of in-service experience, knowledge of modern refractory materials and installation experience.  Our iron making specialists know where the problem areas are and they know what works.  Integrated refractory and cooling systems are analyzed by building 3D models the applying Finite Element Analysis to determine the thermal profile. Thermal profiles are then modified to select the optimum materials and cooling methodology.
CIM-Tech has extensive experience for both blast furnace lining systems and handling of liquid slag and metal. Our projects include the complete design of slag runners, iron runners and troughs including the linings, cooling systems, boxes and forms in conjunction with the casthouse emissions systems.
Refractory materials have evolved and improved significantly over the years.  CIM-Tech has full refractory design and supply capability for all shapes and types of blast furnace refractory including Graphite, Silicon Carbide and High Alumina including emergency fast delivery basis. Staves, tuyeres and cooper cooling members are just some of the products that CIM-Tech has analyzed and developed.

 

STOVE DESIGN AND SUPPLY


Stove design and the associated refractory is among CIM-Tech’s core strengths, we have extensive experience in the design and repair of hot blast stoves. We work with our clients to design solutions for localized repairs for campaign extension, or we can provide a complete state of the art stove design.
Refractory materials and installation methods have improved over the years and CIM-Tech is leading the way. We offer innovative and cost effective solutions that utilize quicker construction techniques that require minimal operational downtime. Utilizing modern refractory we have developed an internal stove ceramic burner that outlasts previous refractory materials.  The burner crowns are especially subject to a large cyclical differential temperature between the hot blast radiant heat to the ambient temperatures during firing cycles.  Further CIM-Tech uses 3D CAD and solid modeling to precisely manufacture the special shapes that take less time to install than the traditional stove burner bricks.

CIM COOLER NITROGEN-MIST COOLING SYSTEM

Leaking blast furnace staves, either cast iron or copper, is a typical problem with Blast Furnaces entering into the end of their campaigns.  Solutions were developed by inserting and grouting flexible metal hoses or installation of cigar coolers.  Neither of these methods offer optimum cooling and require significant down time and construction manpower to install.  CIM-Tech developed the Nitrogen-Mist cooling system after investigating the cooling potential of nitrogen knowing that nitrogen leakage into the furnace would have minimal impact on the furnace operations.  The CIM Cooler injects a nitrogen mist into the staves providing significant cooling. The cooling system station is prefabricated and can be installed with minimal downtime.

 

TUYERE COMBUSTION MONITORING

The CIM-Tech TDS provides for continuous monitoring of combustion through the tuyere peep sight.  The eye is easily mounted on existing Peep Sights and provides for minimal intrusion into operator’s field of view with quick removal for maintenance Tasks.  The system provides visual indication at the tuyere for:

  • System ok
  • Tuyere ok
  • Blocked Tuyere
  • Bright Tuyere

The TDS will allow the operator to:

  • Automatically Shutoff injectants to a tuyere based on light levels
  • Continuously monitor furnace combustion levels
  • Develop a tuyere combustion profile
Collect all data into the furnace data collection system

ABOVE BURDEN PROBE

CIM-Tech has developed a narrow profile water cooled Above Burden Probe with replaceable thermocouples with a robust design that provides for increased in-service life.  We have also worked with our clients and contractors to provide for ease of removal and installation.

 

SPECIALTY VALVES

CIM-Tech has designed and supplied valves for special applications.  Recently we designed and supplied a 114” dustcatcher isolation goggle valve. Stress analysis was performed on the downcomer, including thermal fluctuation, and the valve designed to handle the appropriate stresses.

PROCESS CONTROL AND AUTOMATION

CIM-Tech combines our in-house process expertise and manufacturing capabilities to provide a complete process control system for all parts of the blast furnace system.  As well as designing control systems we have the facilities to supply, manufacture, assemble and test control cabinets at our Valparaiso headquarters.

FUME COLLECTION AND TREATMENT

CIM-Tech has extensive experience with air handling, fume collection and treatment systems. We have designed casthouse emissions systems including cover handling jib cranes and trolley beams.

CHARGING SYSTEMS

CIM-Tech can improve the capacity and optimize the performance of raw material storage and charging systems. By executing time studies of existing charging systems we can perform dynamic analysis to identify bottlenecks and model proposed solutions.
